Typography is the part of the system I’ve been ignoring for a long time.
Not completely - I still use the font sizes, line heights, and the basic properties all the time. But I don’t really use typography as a system anymore. I've created a "Default Styles" that meant to be a middle layer between raw properties and final project styles. But in reality, I almost never reach for them. I either build project-specific heading styles from scratch, or I just use the basic properties directly.
And after a while, I realized, that thing wasn’t random.
The current setup feels too specific and a bit too rough. There aren’t enough flexible styles to build from, and the ones that exist - feels like they were made for a specific kind of tasks. So instead of speeding the design process, typography often turns into something I try to avoid. That’s not how it supposed to feel - especially in a design system built around adaptability and simplicity.
I don’t have a finished solution yet. I haven’t fully sorted out typography system so far, and I’m not sure what exactly will change. But I do know the direction: A stronger properties layer, styles that adapt better, and probably some optional starter sets - like simple desktop and mobile presets for people who want guidance.
This will most likely take a few updates. I’m still trying to find the right balance between flexibility and structure.
And if you ever built complicated typography systems, I would really love to hear your ideas. So I can improve Commerly based on your experience. You can share it through the “Feedback & Suggestion” button below.
